5 myths about exercise that drive me crazy, and how I respond to them.

1. “I’M TOO OLD.”

Response – AGE DOES NOT HOLD YOU BACK – BELIEFS DO.

Studies report that when people exercise they are stronger and leaner than others in their age group. Exercise makes bones stronger and more dense. It lessens the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease, obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, and certain cancers.

Inactivity is a cause of arthritic joint pain. Inactivity also breeds loss of balance. Imbalanced people fall. Falls are one of the leading causes of death in people over 65. Sedentary lifestyles give rise to all the afflictions that exercise prevents such as Alzheimer’s, obesity, heart and bone diseases, to name a few. IF YOU ARE 50+ YOU ARE TOO OLD NOT TO EXERCISE!

(For proof, Google “Benefits of exercise for elderly people.”)

2. “I DON’T NEED TO EXERCISE, I’M HEALTHY.”

Response – BEING HEALTHY IS OVERRATED; IT’S MERELY THE ABSENCE OF DISEASE.

Look at this continuum:

DISEASE —— HEALTH —— FITNESS (WELLNESS)

Obviously, as you move from left to right on the continuum you will be better off.

People who are fit (or well) enjoy more capacity to live life. They have better stamina, are stronger and possess greater flexibility and balance.
Businesses of all types and sizes implement wellness programs for their employees. They know their fit employees are more productive and miss less work than their less well cohorts. These days corporations throw quarters around like they’re manhole covers. There must be something to this wellness stuff!

QUESTION FOR YOU – WHY NOT MOVE FROM HEALTH TO FITNESS?

YES, I WANT TO GET FIT!

3. “I’D FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE IN A GYM.”

Response – COME AND SEE. THEY ARE FULL OF PEOPLE 50+.

The Baby Boomer Generation is the largest generation in American history. There’s an explosion of people entering the phase between middle years and late life. Many of us see the effects of poor lifestyle choices as we deal with our aging parents.
Consequently, many of us have adopted different lifestyles that include exercise. Since pain shared in a group is more palatable, we join health clubs and we participate in different exercise classes offered in our community.
Look around. We’re everywhere. The woods are full of us!

4. “I GET EXERCISE AT WORK.”

Response – WHEN YOU WORK, YOU GET MONEY. WHEN YOU EXERCISE YOU GET FIT!

Physical activity is defined as movement that makes your muscles contract. Exercise is planned, purposeful activity intended to produce health benefits. Okay…that’s a complex answer to the question. Here’s the simple version: Work is work. Play is play. Stevie Wonder can see that!

Tell me what kind of work you do that challenges your heart and lungs, works all the major muscle groups in your body, increases your flexibility and improves your balance? I want to apply for a job there!!

THERE’S A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND EXERCISE!

5. “IT’S TOO EXPENSIVE.”

Response – DON’T LOOK AT JUST THE COST; LOOK AT THE VALUE.

How much do you pay your doctor when you get sick? Does he charge you a ton of money like my doc does? Do you question his charges? No, because he provides a valuable service to you.

Then how much should you pay someone who can help keep you out of the doctor’s office? Who can help you regain abilities that make life exciting again? Who will put pep back in your step? Who will add health to your wealth?

When you invest your time, energy and money into your health and well-being, you make a very wise investment. Stevie Wonder can see that too!

He spent his health to gain his wealth,
And then, with might and mane,
He spent his wealth
To get his health back once again.
